Local MP’s wood bill clears big hurdle

The MP for South Okanagan-West Kootenay feels his private members bill is “revolutionary”.

Richard Cannings’ Bill C-354 passed its first vote at second reading last week in the House of Commons.

If the bill becomes law the government will be required to consider using wood or wood products for infrastructure projects.

He says it drew support from MPs of all different backgrounds.

He adds it would be great for Canada’s lumber industry.

He says it had support from some Tory MP’s but the whip forced them to vote against it.

The bill will be reviewed by the Natural Resources Committee which Cannings vice-chairs.
