UPDATED: Cougar put down in Slocan Valley

A cougar that killed a dog near Lemon Creek in the Slocan Valley has been put down.

A second dog was also attacked Monday afternoon but survived.

Sgt. Cynthia Mann of the BC Conservation Officer Service says they also found a fresh deer kill in the area.

She says the animal, an adult male estimated to be about eight and a half years old, was trapped and euthanized today.

She adds it’s unusual to see cougars in the afternoon.

The cougar was thin but not emaciated.

Before it was caught, conservation officers warned people to stay away from that section of the rail trail.
