Chief forester explains reduction in allowable cut

BC’s chief forester is explaining why the annual allowable cut in the Arrow timber supply area is being reduced.

Diane Nicholls says there were a few key factors.

Nicholls also says more wildlife habitat is now protected.

She adds a lot of work goes into the decision.

Nicholls says she considered growth rates, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and industry demands.

The cut is being reduced from 513,000 cubic meters per year to 500,000 for the next decade.

The Arrow district covers about 1.3 million hectares of the West Kootenay.

It includes areas around Greater Trail, Castlegar, and the Slocan Valley.
