BC building code legislation worries rural director

Our regional district has concerns about the province bringing in a universal BC-wide building code.

Rural Kaslo director Andy Shadrack – who is working with the Union of BC Municipalities on this file – says that may be fine for typical multi-storey buildings in the lower mainland.

But our rural communities are mainly about small wood build.

Legislation is expected next spring but few details are known.

Shadrack says it could mean the end to local government building inspectors and take away some flexibility in materials and codes that would drive construction and reno costs up.
