Is a local rural homeowners insurance program viable?

The Regional District of Central Kootenay is eager to get the ball rolling on finding out if special insurance can be established for rural homeowners.

Residents face spiralling costs after a recent Fire Underwriter’s Survey found many rural homes were too far from their nearest fire hall.

Rural Director Andy Davidoff says they’re contacting the Columbia Basin Trust to see if they – or any other entity -can do a feasibility study on creating a home-grown insurance program.

He says neighboring regional districts will also be asked to chip in for the study.

The regional district disputes the risks in rural areas being highlighted by the underwriters survey.
