B-C Hydro’s plan to purchase the remaining two-thirds interest in the Waneta Dam near Trail should ensure continued affordable rates for its customers.
Spokeswoman Mora Scott says the proposed purchase would also stimulate the local economy.
 Teck Trail Operations agreed to sell its two-thirds interest to Fortis in May but B-C Hydro is exercising its right of first refusal.
If the sale is approved B-C Hydro will purchase the interest for $1.2 billion.
