Local seniors' food bank use on rise

More and more seniors are having to access food banks in our community.

The latest report by the Nelson Committee on Homelessness shows anywhere between 10% and 25% of visits are now from seniors.

Pastor Jim Reimer at Our Daily Bread says his figures are even higher as state pensions haven’t changed.

The universal Old Age Security pension and Income Supplement total $1,275 a month and that’s just not enough for accommodation and food.

The Homelessness Committee is calling on advocates and the community to write to all levels of government calling for more affordable housing.
