Kootenay Savings lockout begins

Kootenay Savings is calling it a one-day lockout but the union doesn’t see it that way.

Jeff Bromley with the United Steelworkers says picket lines will be up today at all unionized branches.

He says they won’t return to work until they have a new contract.

Management says if unionized workers aren’t back on the job Saturday they’ll consider them on strike.

CEO Brent Tremblay says the union’s move came as a bit of a surprise.

If there’s no resolution Kootenay Savings will offer reduced hours in Trail, Castlegar, and South Slocan.

The Fruitvale, Salmo, and Kaslo branches will be closed for now.
