Your lawn doesn't need as much water as you may think

It’s barely summer but the city of Nelson is calling on residents to do the right thing when it comes to water use.

They’re getting the message out that your lawn doesn’t need the amount of water you may think it does.

The city’s public works and utility department says lawns need only 3 cms of water – that’s equal to about an hour of sprinkling – per week.

The city is asking residents to water outdoors earlier in the morning or in the evening and only every other day based on your house number and whether it’s an odd or even day of the month.

The aim is to reduce demand on the distribution and treatment system and help the environment.

A water smart ambassador working with the City and Columbia Basin Trust will be walking neighborhoods and engaging residents on water use.
