Gilpin wildfire caused by vehicle malfuncion

A faulty vehicle exhaust on the highway hasĀ been identified as the cause of last week’s wildfire outside of Grand Forks.

The blaze, in the Gilpin grassland, spread quickly to 224 hectares.

Karlie Shaughnessy, withĀ the South East Fire Centre, says these types of incidents are not uncommon.

However in this case it was NOT a recreational vehicle.

Over 70Ā firefighters, three helicopters and four pieces of heavy equipment were deployed to fight the blaze over a four day period.

No chargesĀ will beĀ laid against the driver and no structures were lost.
