Grand Forks demolition derby cancelled

The annual demolition derby in Grand Forks has been cancelled.

The main concern was the location chosen for the June event.

The lot on highway three is in very close proximity to the kettle river so environmental contamination is a concern.

Mayor Frank Conrad says there were also liability worries if someone got injured or killed.

Even though the event organizers had promised a clean-up, spills from the wrecked cars were deemed a risk to the aquifer.

With better preparation city council says it would be open to events like this in the future.
