A couple of local students figure the visit by sports star Clara Hughes has made a big impression regarding mental health.
The multiple Olympic medallist spoke to about a thousand secondary school kids at Nelson’s LVR on Monday nearly all of whom were enthralled by her own story of teen troubles and later depression despite sporting success.
Katie Camilleri says anxiety and depression are common among teens and fellow student Taavi Wickman says it’s opportune their school is now having a mental health awareness week .
Hughes says youth need to fell supported by their peers through mental illness and seek professional help.
