BC moving towards organic certification

BC is getting closer to organic certification.

Bill 11 – the Food and Agricultural Products Classification Act – has been introduced in the BC Legislature.

If it passes, it will create certainty with the labelling of organic products.

Kootenay Co-op’s Nadine Benrhaba says there is currently no law enforcing the use of the word organic.

Benrhaba says it’s important for farmers to be able to clearly market products to consumers so rules need to exist.

The changes would require all food and beverage products marketed as organic to be certified under a provincial or national certification program by 2018.
