SD20 cancels recess, Union reacts

The Kootenay Columbia School District will cancel recess at elementary schools and reduce breaks at secondary schools.

As the teachers strike action and their refusal to supervise continues, this means the school day will end fifteen minutes earlier.

The measures will start next Tuesday after the long weekend.

Superintendent Greg Luterbach says student safety is their priority and they have limited staff to handle supervision.

No instructional time will be lost and the start time for the school day will not change.

Meanwhile, Kootenay Columbia Teachers Union President Andy Davidoff questions the decision, given that teachers handle their job plus supervision every day.

He questions why School District 20 would “get on the recess cancellation band-wagon” as he puts it, when the East Kootenay District has just reinstated recess.
