Major storm hits West Kootenay

Residents across the West Kootenay were  getting a good look Tuesday morning at the extent of damage caused by the short but powerful storm that struck late Monday.

It swept in over Castlegar and then Nelson late in the day ripping out trees and causing widespread power outages and property damage.

All power was lost in Nelson although many homes were back up by morning and others were to be restored in the coming hours.

The south part of Castlegar was without power but that is  being restored.

Nakusp and New Denver were without power still.

Trees at Nelson’s Lakeside Park have been uprooted or major limbs ripped off.

One person was injured as a tree fell through their roof. Some small fires were reported as downed lines became re-energized.

A greenhouse at the park was smashed by a falling tree.
