Harnessing the power of Nelson’s water

The future upgrading of Nelson’s ageing underground infrastructure could generate revenue instead of just being a burden on taxpayers.

That’s the message from city councillor Anna Purcell who says there is a lot of excitement around the table about using the Queen City’s gravity-fed water for electricity.

That means not only micro hydro on creeks but possibly turbines within existing pipe lines to complement the solar array idea already being discussed.

Purcell campaigned last year on sustainability and she says there is strong support at council for getting micro hydro up and running to tie into the Nelson Hydro grid.
