Nelson affordable rental dream needs city backing

A new affordable rental development in Nelson can happen if the community and politicians share the will.

This from proponent Jim Reimer from Kootenay Christian Fellowship following last week’s public showing of his concept for the project near the end of Baker Street.

Reimer says his church would donate the half million dollars worth of land but he’d like to see commitment from the city too.

Reimer figures the city could waive as much as $200,000 in development fees for the estimated $6 million 40-unit project.

He says the whole idea is a “dream” but he and his church are stepping up to the plate with a vision that Nelson needs. Almost $2 million in cash, grants or in-kind donations is needed to ensure affordable rentals of $600 to $800 a month.
