Rain keeps local fire situation calm

It’s been a very quiet fire season in southeast BC so far.

Information officer Karlie Shaughnessy says thanks to wet weather the numbers are down considerably.

So far 50 fires have burned a total of 391 hectares.

The five-year average is 109 fires and 481 hectares burnt by this time.

The only fire of note to date was the one last month on the Gilpin grasslands that grew to 224 hectares.

But Shaughnessy says that doesn’t mean crews are idle.
