NPD officer guilty of assault

Nelson’s police chief is calling the guilty verdict for one of his officers a watershed moment.

Constable Drew Turner was convicted yesterday of assault in the arrest last year of Tawny Campbell.

She was drunk and disorderly and resisted police.

The judge found Turner used unreasonable force in punching her in the face that knocked her unconscious.

Chief Wayne Holland says nothing like this has happened in the department’s long history.

Holland says it’s a sad situation and he respects the court decision.

But he stands behind his officer and is awaiting Turner’s sentencing and a report and recommendations from the Vancouver Police’s own investigation into the matter.
